Stopover in Portugal

August 02, 2005
Cascais, Portugal

We are enjoying our couple of days here in Portugal, our brief stopover en route to Turkey. We flew into Lisbon two days ago with no guidebook, armed only with the very limited Portuguese vocabulary that we picked up in Brazil. We decided to spend our few days here in Cascais, one of the small beach town outside Lisbon. It is about an hour away from downtown Lisbon by train.

It has been gorgeous here with lots of sun and blue skies with a nice (if a little strong) breeze. It is a beautiful town built into the hills with narrow, cobblestone roads. The town reminds me a lot of some of the places I remeber from Italy, like Cinque Terre and the Almalfi Coast.

I did a quick daytrip yesterday to Sintra, another beautiful little town with a number of palaces and a Moorish castle overlooking it from on top of a mountain.

We fly out at 6:30 am tomorrow for Istanbul, Turkey to meet up with Aaron Niedermayer and Aaron Rosenthal (they have a blog too). Since we leave so early, we have decided to save money on a hotel room for tonight and spend the night at the airport. Should be interesting...
